Message sadly, it seems to be common in the business. Probably because the penalties for them getting caught are very small and most buyers are not astute enough to get a complete vehicle history (i.e. pull a carfax, call BMW USA and find the dealer that serviced the car, contact the servicing dealer for a history, etc.). Plus, taking some miles off, even 10-20K, makes a big difference on the value of the car.

Remember, most car dealers make minimal profits on new sales, the lucrative end of their business is used cars where the margins often exceed 30-40%. A private sale is your best bet and make sure you get complete records- what service was done when and at what mileage- from day one.
